2021 Virtual Horsebowl Challenge
Saturday, March 13th
Due to current COVID-19 restrictions, and the inability of districts to host qualifying events, the 2021 NC 4-H Horsebowl Contest will not be held in person. However, we are pleased to announce that we will be offering a Virtual Horsebowl Challenge! The details for this event are outlined here. The Horse Bowl Contest is designed to offer an opportunity for youths interested in horses to display the knowledge they have gained in a competitive and friendly atmosphere. Additionally, it is designed to encourage youths and leaders to study and obtain a more thorough and complete knowledge of horses and related subject matter. Youths will gain confidence in their horse knowledge and be rewarded and recognized for their achievements. Local club, county, or inter-county competition is encouraged whenever feasible. Finally, the Horse Bowl Contest is designed to always provide an enjoyable educational experience for participants and spectators.

- Junior Rookie (youth ages 8-13 that have never competed in a Horsebowl Contest on the District or State level)
- Junior (youth ages 8-13)
- Senior Rookie (youth ages 14-18 that have never competed in a Horsebowl Contest on the District or State level)
- Senior (youth ages 14-18 that have not competed in national-level horsebowl contests)

2021 Horse Judging Contest

The 2021 NC State 4-H Horse Judging Contest will be held April 10th. Depending on The Horse Judging Contest is designed to teach participants good conformation (structural correctness, balance, and muscling), breed character, and performance ideals in different breeds of horses. Additionally, the Horse Judging contest will teach participants how to evaluate horses based on knowledge and fact, make a decision, and defend it. The Contest will teach participants horsemanship terms that can be used in a logical, systematic way to defend placings and will help participants gain confidence in their ability and use of the English language by giving oral reasons to a judge while learning to speak clearly, decisively, and convincingly through the use of oral reasons. Depending on COVID restrictions, this event may be held in person at St. Andrews. If restrictions are in place that prohibit an in-person event, the contest will be moved to an online format and will take place on this same day. Contestants will give oral reasons via Zoom.
2021 Horse Eligibility Card Procedure
Blank eligibility cards will no longer be available. Please follow the below steps to request an eligibility card for any 4-H’er wishing to show a project animal at the NC 4-H State Horse Show.
Any 4-H’er (or parent) wishing to exhibit a project animal at the NC 4-H State Horse Show must submit an Eligibility Card Request Form. This is a form to be completed online that will ask for the same information that is generally on an eligibility card (horse and rider info, division, etc.) and will not require any signatures yet.
Youth need to be sure to have all paperwork (including eligibility cards) completed in time to meet entry deadlines for their selected qualifying show. Read More about Eligibility Card Procedure
