Eastern North Carolina has seen many hurricanes, however, this may be the first we have seen during a pandemic. Here are some ways to prepare for a hurricane during a pandemic. First, you will need to decide if you will be sheltering in place or evacuating. Shelters are not planned to be open in our immediate area. Nash County urges everyone to make plans now to shelter in place, if safe to do so, or stay with another family member or friend or in a hotel room. If you do have to evacuate make sure you pack your hand sanitizer and face coverings. You should pack your to-go bags ahead of time. However, if you find yourself in a rush to evacuate and you can not find your face masks, find a bandana, or scarf to take with you.

You will need to purchase, or locate thermometers in case of power outages, and you need to make sure your refrigerator, freezers, and coolers are at proper temperature to avoid food spoilage. Some foods will need to be tossed if they are at 41°F or above for more than 4 hours. Some examples of these foods are; cut greens, cut tomatoes, cut melons, dishes made with meat, poultry, fish, eggs, soft cheese, animal stocks, raw and cooked meat, poultry, fish, and eggs, cooked grains, pasta, and potatoes. Also, check the stock of your refrigerator. Some good items to have on hand in case the power goes out are whole, fresh fruits, and vegetables, hard cheeses, baked goods without custard fillings. Some prepackaged items to have on hand are shelf-stable foods in cans, jars, or pouches, nut butters, jams, or jellies, chips, crackers, and cookies. You need to store or purchase water and prepare coolers and purchase ice or dry ice.
