At a recent meeting we discussed production practices for runner market types versus virginia market types. The primary buyer of runners in our area is Birdsong. They are interested in high oleic runners. Here are some summary notes:
The runner market types TUFrunner 297 and TUFrunner 511 have yielded well in our trials when compared with virginia market types
Runner market types will often reach optimum maturity a week or so later than virginia market types
Runners typically hold on vines better than virginia market types do, especially in finer-textured soils
Budgets for runner market types (conventional and conservation tillage) are found in 2023 Peanut Information
Contracts for runner market types generally run lower than those for virginia market types ($1,033/acre for virginia market types and $990/acre for runner market types)
Plant density needs to be 5 per row-foot (approximately 110 pounds/acre for runner market types)
Gypsum at half the rate for virginia market types is recommended for runner market types
Leaf spot and stem rot spray programs are the same for virginia and runner market types
Due to later maturity, runner market types are more susceptible to southern corn rootworm, especially on finer-textured soils
