N.C. Cooperative Extension, Randolph County Center is offering a Backyard Gardener Course. The 6-week course is open to the public and covers the basics of gardening. Attend one Information Session and four of six classes to earn a Randolph Backyard Gardener Certificate! Each class will be offered twice. Tuesday classes will take place from 1–3 p.m. and Wednesday classes will take place from 6:30–8:30 p.m. All classes will be held on Zoom and you will receive a Zoom link to the event upon registration.

Attend one Information Session and five of six Randolph Backyard Gardener classes to become eligible for the Extension Master Gardener℠ program in Randolph County during 2021. Extension Master Gardener℠ volunteer training will be held in the fall.

Classes and Registration Information

Lawns in Central North CarolinaTuesday, February 16, 2021, 1–3 p.m., or Wednesday, February 17, 2021, 6:30–8:30 p.m.

We will cover how to establish and care for your lawn, the advantages and disadvantages of different grass species, sustainable landscaping practices, and alternatives to lawns in your landscape.

Growing Fruits & Berries: Tuesday, February 23, 2021, 1–3 p.m., or Wednesday, February 24, 2021, 6:30–8:30 p.m.

This class will include choosing what to plant, site selection, pest management, and instruction on training and pruning various fruit crops.

Growing Vegetables: Tuesday, March 2, 2021, 1–3 p.m., or Wednesday, March 3, 2021, 6:30–8:30 p.m.

In this class we will cover choosing the right site for your garden, selecting crops, and seasonal tips for spring, summer, and fall.

Growing Culinary Herbs: Tuesday, March 9, 2021, 1–3 p.m., or Wednesday, March 10, 2021, 6:30–8:30 p.m.

We will cover the basics of growing annual and perennial culinary herbs in raised beds and containers. We will also cover tips for using and preserving culinary herbs. This event will feature Randolph County’s Family and Consumer Science Agent, Jeannie Leonard.

Gardening for Pollinators: Tuesday, March 16, 2021, 1–3 p.m., or Wednesday, March 17, 2021, 6:30–8:30 p.m.

This class will include the basics of growing a pollinator-friendly landscape, simple ways to protect pollinators, and give examples of pollinator friendly plants.

Landscaping with Natives: Tuesday, March 23, 2021, 1–3 p.m., or Wednesday, March 24, 2021, 6:30–8:30 p.m.

Learn about gardening with perennials, native trees, and shrubs in the North Carolina Piedmont! We will cover the basics of different native landscape plants and the environmental benefits of gardening with natives.
