Salvia
Salvia officinalis
Salvia often referred to as sage can serve as a low growing shrub, annual bedding plant, or ground cover. It is a perennial that is part of the mint family and comes in a variety of colors and sizes. The salvia varieties highlighted in the video above are those that do well here on the Outer Banks.
Salvia is a pollinator magnet attracting bees, hummingbirds, and butterflies.
Many of the Salvia varieties have aromatic leaves that when brushed up against or crushed give off scents ranging from sweet to savory.
Highlights
- Salt tolerant.
- Soils with good drainage; like sandy soils.
- Drought & heat tolerant once established.
- Deer resistant.
- Attracts Pollinators.
Care
- Regular moisture increases blooms.
- Remove spent flower spikes to lengthen the bloom period.
Pest & Diseases
- Leaf spot.
- Powdery mildew.
- Watch for Aphids, White Flies, Mealy bugs, and Spider Mites.
